Land Below the Winds

Ancient seafarers once referred to Southeast Asia as the “Land Below the Winds” (Di Bawah Angin). Singapore, shaped by the alternating Northeast and Southwest monsoons, is blessed with abundant rainfall and fertile soil. From this, lush tropical forests have flourished, nurturing a rich tapestry of local culture and traditions.

Land Below the Winds brings together over 100 artworks by members of Siaw-Tao, inviting you to wander—through the wind, within the paintings, across the calligraphy writing, and into the art of seal engraving—exploring this vibrant land as expressed through their brush and seal.

I will be showcasing one painting, “Everyday Singapore: Keeping up with Emotional Support” (日常所见:精神支柱。。。你有、我也有)

Opening: Friday, 8 May, 7:00 PM
Exhibition Period: 7–24 May, 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM
Venue: Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, Multi-Purpose Hall, Level 7
This programme is part of the Cultural Extravaganza 2026 presented by @singaporechineseculturalcentre. Please visit singaporen.sg/ce for more information.

Emerging from Play: Clay Seals

I will be moderating this talk on ceramic seal, which will feature two prolific ceramic seal-carvers in Singapore, artists Oh Chai Hoo and Chua Chon Hee. It will discuss the reason of their choice of this material; their artistic conceptualization and methods/techniques of creation; as well as the potential of this artform in our today’s context. Along the way, they shall share their clay seal creations and artistic journey.
